Following its success this Autumn, we are pleased to announce that “New to Caring” is back for February 2026 and ready to support new unpaid carers in the London Borough of Sutton.
“New to Caring” is a collaboration between the Council, Sutton College, Sutton Carer’s Centre, Citizens Advice and Sutton Talking Therapies, and is a part of the borough’s new Carers Strategy.
The course has been designed specifically for unpaid carers who provide care to an older adult in Sutton. It is FREE and covers topics such as carer’s rights, financial and legal matters, home adaptations, assistive technology, looking after yourself and planning ahead.
Unpaid carers who participated in this course in 2025 told us:
-
“This course is so useful. And what I like is that you brought in experts and we get a chance to speak to them, which we never (get to) do.”
-
“It’s not just about the content. You have given me links, resources, and things to help when I go home.”
-
“At the beginning, I would say there wasn't much there [to support carers]. Since attending this course my eyes have been opened to the support that's out there for people like us.”
The four course sessions will run at Sutton College on Tuesdays from 12 pm to 1:30 pm, starting on Tuesday 3rd February and concluding on Tuesday 3rd March (with no session on Tuesday 17th February due to the half-term break).
To be eligible to attend, carers must be providing unpaid care for an older adult, such as a partner or family member, and have a Sutton postcode OR be registered with a Sutton GP OR care for someone living in Sutton.
