What is this service?

Sutton Befrienders aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness for older people and adults with support needs living in the London Borough of Sutton. We do this through matching vetted and trained volunteers with people who have little or no social connections and regard themselves as lonely. As well as providing one to one support, we run a wide range of group activities tailored to their needs.

We carefully match people with volunteers, to provide regular contact and social interaction, or to support them to re-engage in their community.

As well as one-to-one befrienders, we are also looking for volunteers to lead or support with group activities.

We provide:

  • Full training including communication skills, confidentiality, risk assessment and safeguarding.

  • Regular support and contact from the Sutton Befrienders coordinators.

  • Extensive activity programme including walking groups and social activities.

As well as our 1:1 befriending programme, we also run several group activities to help adults of all ages feel better connected to their community.  We hold a range of activities to benefit not only just physical health but also to improve mental wellbeing.
