The process we took to create each mound is described below. Can you help the butterflies by adding another "Steeping Stone" ?
- Identifying a location that is south facing and not shaded by any trees. Asking permission of the landowner and local community.
Undertaking an ecological habitat survey of the land to record its botanical diversity to ensure we are not creating habitat on high value habitat.
Scrape back the top soil and turf with a digger, compact and pile it into small mounds. This is to remove the nutrients from the soil.
Import crushed chalk dust and lay it over the subsoil to a depth of 150-350mm. Then plant with a mix of native chalk grassland species.
