Independent Travel Training

Independent Travel Training is a service provided by Cognus on behalf of The London Borough of Sutton that aims to help young people develop the skills, confidence and awareness they need to travel safely and independently. The service is designed to support preparation for adulthood, improve access to education and the wider community, and give families greater confidence in a young person’s travel abilities.

Each programme is tailored to the individual young person and their agreed route. Training may include road safety on walking routes, using public transport, recognising landmarks, managing money and travel passes, asking for help, dealing with delays and responding safely if something unexpected happens.

Training is introduced gradually and at a pace that suits the young person. Our trainers work closely with families, schools and other professionals to make sure the right support, reasonable adjustments and safety measures are in place throughout the programme.

The service may be suitable for young people who need support to build confidence and practical skills when travelling to school, college or another agreed destination. Each referral is considered individually, taking account of the young person’s strengths, needs, communication, health, SEND and current level of travel experience.

How to make a referral?

Cognus welcomes referrals from anyone who is interested in the service. Referrals can be made by parents or carers, schools, colleges, professionals, the young person themselves, or another person supporting them.
