Employment Advice and Information for Young People with SEND

Having a job can help you build confidence, learn new skills, earn money and become more independent.

There are different ways to prepare for work and find a job. The right option will depend on your interests, skills, qualifications and support needs.

Your Options

There are different routes into employment.

Supported Internships

A supported internship helps young people gain workplace experience and develop employment skills.

• Age: 16 to 24

• EHCP required: Yes

• Paid: No

Most of your learning takes place in a real workplace. You will receive support from a Job Coach and your education provider.

Supported internships are designed to help you move into paid employment.

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship combines paid work with training.

• Age: Usually 16+

• EHCP required: No

• Paid: Yes

You will work for an employer, earn a wage and gain skills and qualifications.

If you have an EHCP, extra support may be available through your training provider and employer.

Volunteering

Volunteering can help you gain experience and build confidence before applying for work.

• Age: Varies by organisation

• EHCP required: No

• Paid: No

Supported Employment Services

Some young people may need extra help to prepare for work, find a job or stay in employment.
